Maurice Tiberius

582 - 602

In the four years that Tiberius II had been in power he managed to nearly deplete an imperial treasury which just some years earlier had boasted of what seemed like an inexhaustible supply of gold. As the dying emperor handed over power to Maurice the latter must have sensed an immediate anxiety over how to continue to fund the empire’s civic and military needs.

He had no choice but to rein in spending to the absolute minimum, a crash program which earned him no friends and, in fact, would be the direct cause of his death twenty years later after a mutiny of disenchanted soldiers stormed the palace carting off with the hapless emperor.

His miserliness only helped to slow the inevitable and – and until the bitter end 750 years later – inexorable erosion of territorial possessions and diplomatic clout. Steadily, one city after another is lost to this tribe or that sometimes to be regained briefly by the imperial forces but never fully recovering from the initial siege. Likewise, in political and theological matters Constantinople begins to matter less and less to its neighbors until the point of irrelevancy.
